5mm wetsuits
A 5mm wetsuit is ideal for milder temperature conditions, and whether it is suitable for you depends on the activity you plan to undertake. If you are going diving, a 5mm wetsuit is suitable for water temperatures between 20 and 27 ºC, such as in the Mediterranean in summer or winter in the Red Sea. For colder waters, a 7mm wetsuit is advised, while for warmer waters you can use a 3mm wetsuit or shorty.
The importance of the right wetsuit
Wearing the right wetsuit is crucial in any dive. The wetsuit provides insulation to stay warm in the water and also serves as protection. The suit should be close-fitting without restricting movement or pinching off circulation. Since every brand has a different fit, determining the right size can be challenging. Therefore, trying on is the best way to make sure the diving suit fits properly. In our dive shop, our staff will be happy to help you choose the right 5mm wetsuit (or any other thickness), with ample stock and expert advice.
5mm wetsuits for men and women
The main feature of a 5mm wetsuit is of course the thickness of the neoprene, while the fit also plays an important role. We offer 5mm wetsuits for both men and women, with men's models generally having a slightly roomier cut with wider shoulders than women's models.
Benefits of 5mm wetsuits
One of the biggest advantages of a 5mm wetsuit is its balanced combination of insulation, freedom of movement and protection. Compared to 3mm wetsuits, they offer more insulation and protection, while providing more freedom of movement than 7mm wetsuits. This makes 5mm wetsuits great for surfing, supping and other water sports.
Considerations when choosing a 5mm wetsuit
Choosing a 5mm wetsuit can be challenging. Besides size and fit, there are several options and extras to consider, such as reinforcements on the knees and elbows for durability, or an extra fleece layer on the inside for more insulation and comfort. The price of 5mm wetsuits varies due to these factors.
Back zip / Backzip
In wetsuits with a back zip, the closure is located at the back. This design makes it easy to put on and take off the suit, although closing the zip independently takes some practice. The back zip also gives you more freedom of movement at the arms and shoulders. Keep in mind, however, that a backzip does let a bit more water through compared to other closure types.
Front zip
In wetsuits with a front zip, the closure is placed at the front, on the chest. This closure is easy to handle and provides a quick way to open and close the wetsuit.
